Not related to people bickering over who said what on social medias and who is wringing their hands together trying to appear to be in touch with their feelings, but I've never got the suicide is selfish thing which even as someone who hasn't been on here long predictably bolty was the first to deliver.

Suicide is a devastating thing, it leaves a person dead and everyone left behind not knowing if they could have done something to stop it. If you're at the point where you think everyone will be better off with you dead then the last thing you're being is selfish even though you're reasoning is all over the place.

Whether you're a crack head in the gutter or a famous person is neither here nor there, you get one go at this shit and to feel you're better off giving it up is a terrible thing.

The thing is, it leaves a lot more unanswered questions than answered ones so I'm not actually sure your loved ones ever get to know that your thought process was that everyone is better off without you.

I have a pal who recently retired from Virgin Trains and prior to that worked on a freight-only line between Sheffield and Manchester. He had half a dozen people kill themselves using his train as the cause. Not selfish?

It would be selfish if the person was thinking rationally but if that was the case they wouldn't be there in the first place.

To be selfish you would have to be putting yourself before everyone else rather than doing it because you thought it was the best thing for everyone.

I would never pretend to know how every person who commits suicide feels before they do it and nor should anyone else, I can only pass comment on how I think it must feel and from a very very  limited experience of the situation.

Anyone who thinks anyone who kills themselves as selfish is a moron.

I think we've been here before. Probably the last time a celebrity killed themself.

And will undoubtedly be here again the next time.

Well we need to stop looking at famous folk as some sort of justification

It happens to everyday folk probably every day

I've battled issues with mental health. I got asked if I could commit suicide

A deffo no but if I probably tried I'd fuck it up

If you met me at my worst you'd think I was a cunt. It cost me a relationship

Anybody who takes their life must have been in a far worse place than I was. And I thought I was bad

Never thought his playing career would ever end, never mind his life.

The Brits down here are all stunned too. Such a nice bl;oke with seemingly everything to live for.

RIP Gary.

Suicide is a selfish act and leaves behind a trail of shattered lives so I am struggling to feel the depth of compassion and sympathy being expressed by many.

It does leave a lot of questions and you do wrestle trying to understand reasons and if you could’ve prevented anything and look back to see if you missed triggers which you think looking back were obvious and should you of done something, no matter what you’ll never know. That’s the worse part and the hardest to come to terms with if you ever do.

you piece things together and try to make it fit a narrative, in reality you can’t.

You say that why? You know of my personal circumstances and how suicide has affected me personally? If so, fair enough but if you were just having a pop I'll come back at you.

When I see the father and two sons a couple of years later, it is still too much for them to take as I remind them of what they have lost and the tears can flow - especially from the youngest son.

Don't waste your time trying to convince me that the ones left behind aren't the ones who suffer the most..

Without doubt a shocker for those left behind.

What I would say, is that at the point of suicide, rational thinking is impossible. It's gone completely.

It does cross the mind that those left behind might actually be better off once the act is done, even if it might take a bit of time do get there.

A attempt at justification perhaps, maybe the mind actually trying to find clarity in the confusion but selecting the wrong path.

I've used the word selfish myself in the past, but having experienced it since, I'd modify it slightly. The person isn't selfish, but there is an element of selfishness within it, together with desperation, self loathing, love etc.

A shit situation.

Wasn't having a pop, could have sworn you'd posted about your experience with it before - if I'm mistaken then I'll hold my hand up.

In many, many cases it doesn’t just cross the mind it’s right at the front and is the very reason for the act. Mix it in with desperation and self-loathing like you say and it’s a very sad and shit situation

Absolutely. A true mind fuck of a situation.

I suppose I was fortunate in that I didn't get that far. Always another counter thought that it would be a cunt's trick. Which then brought about feelings of guilt for considering it!

That's the nature of the illness sadly.
