This is the right move for all concerned. MJ has done a great job for us (not least with his emergency cb work late last season) but we're moving beyond his level and we need better.

Now's the time to invest in that midfield bastard (or two)!

.... this also weakens us further re cb cover although it seems Toal may be back before 4 Aug. Be handy if our midfield signings had that emergency cb string to their bow.

Would be really surprised if that happened? Another right/wing back, 33 years old this year. Wouldnt think he would be an Evatt type signing at that age. Having said that, he signed Jerome, so who knows!

Let's see how this one goes

Does anyone know if the Baccus deal is definitely dead, because I see he’s still at St Mirren.

I think at the time the club said they pulled the plug after doing their due diligence when both deals fell through . When you say that about a player would have thought it would be difficult to reverse. Your basically saying he is a crock or is attitude is wrong

I thought the story with Baccus was he baulked at the wages

You can reverse that by deciding to accept the offer

IE has said we only players who want to play for the club

That to me means we may not offer the best wages so it's up to the player as to whether it's a good move for them

Wilson no doubt got a better deal at Derby

Baccus probably thinks he can get a better one seeing his contract out or that he'll get one before the end of the window

They didnt know what they where doing in Jan? Was there any progress? Did you see any progress?  Are you happy with forwards signed in Jan? Are you happy with Nludlu, sorry my spelling isnt the best. We started jan in 5th position, and ended up there. Is that progress? As you say, lets see how it goes, we all want the same thing, promotion.

There was one comment by evatt about not paying players more than the rest to keep the rest of the squad happy so I suppose he could have been referring to Baccus and the due diligence might of been aimed at the other player 🤷‍♂️.
But That would still make it unlikely that he would now go back and pay him more if it’s down to money . Would probably need the player to reduce is demands or stay at at mirren

I suspect Baccus' agent had a hand in the outcome. I'm also one who thinks the deal may not be dead yet - but it's probably in intensive care and receiving last rites.

Cheers Farny, I think if we’ve pulled the plug that will be the end of it.

Last season he was earning £800pw  (£41,600pa). We HAVE to have offered him above that. By quite a margin.

Someone has told him he could do better. Rumour also were that the Oz International manager wasn't keen on him 'stepping down' to the 3rd tier (from St. Mirren ... he's having a laugh).

I dont believe for a second that the Australian national team manager had anything to do with that .

Alfie has pissed that league for 5 years and the days of Johnstone , Kewell, Viduka & Cahill are long gone.

If its true he doesnt know his arse from his elbow and should keep his mouth shut .

Yeah I meant in terms of reversal was for the player to change his mind, not us, I don't think we would up our offer now

There was something said in the media him (or someone else connected to the national team) commenting about dropping down to League 1 - and you're right - it's none of his business and it's said to have put pressure on Baccus not to sign. Twat.

That said there's nowt wrong with the current Aussie team.

The 2006 WC squad with the players you mentioned had only 3 players from the Aussie league - most (11) played in England. They won 1 drew 1 and lost 1 of the group matches and then lost to Italy in the round of 16.

FWIW the 2022 Aussie WC squad had 7 from the Aussie league and 6 playing in Scotland and yet they did just as well - arguably better than the 2006 squad, having won a game more.

They won 2 out of 3 group matches (lost to France) and then put the shits up the Argies narrowly losing 2 - 1 in the round of 16. Tough draw but they put up a helluva fight.

Not as much individual flair as the 2006 lot, but they are much better as a team and individually as grafters and athletes. Watched them a few weeks back in a friendly with Argentina and Baccus et al did really well but lost out to some individual brilliance from that man Messi.

We (England) are playing them at Wembley in October.

Reckon Hunt will most likely he'll go back to Huddersfield where he started his career but with QPR, Charlton and us also interested you never know. However with so many clubs interested there's likely to be a bidding war which is not something we are likely to get involved with unless we are really, really desperate.

Respectfully disagree.

The current Australian squad is the worst in the last 25 years that I've been watching them. The fact that most of the squad play in Australia or Scotland is an indicator. The 1-man up-front who started every WC game plays in the Japanese 2nd division. Their most represented clubs at the 2022 WC were Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners (the club that offered Usain Bolt a trial).

Man-for-man the 2006 squad is better than the 2022 squad, with the exeception of Mooy and Souttar.

2022 - they won 2 out of 4 games - yes. But they had the lowest xG of any team to ever get out of a WC group, and had 35% possession in 3 of their 4 games. They limped into the WC, having finished 3rd in Asia Group B, easily beaten by Japan and Saudi Arabia along the way. Only just beat UAE in a one-off game, to then beat Peru on penalties in Dubai. France and Argentina took the piss out of us. Argentina had stopped playing after scoring a 2nd, and only a deflected goal from 30 yards out, allowed us to flood the box in the last 2 minutes.

By contrast, the 2006 team beat a very strong Uruguay side (Recoba, Zalayeta, Forlan up-front, and a few players at Madrid and Juventus) on penalties after home and away legs. Not easy playing Uruguay in Montevideo with a WC spot on the line.

At the WC, they troubled Brazil (Kewell missed a tap-in), beat Japan, and only needed a draw against a good Croatia side which they got (Graham Poll giving a Croatian player 3 yellow cards). Against Italy, they were well in control. Italy had a player sent off, Viduka missed a sitter, Hiddink had Australia playing for extra time, and an Italian player fell over Lucas Neill in the box late-on, penalty. Italy go on to win the World Cup.

The 2022 team - grafters and athletes - you're dead right.

But an abysmal squad with a terribly defensive mindset. Although when your strikers play for 2nd Division Japanese teams and Melbourne, you probably don't have many other options. Especially, when you have a decent goalkeeper, one of the best defenders at the WC, and Mooy playing deep.

Le Fondre top-scorer for a couple of consecutive seasons well-into his mid-30's, and Craig (freaking) Noone picking up Man of the Month awards are all you need to know about the A-League.

The manager obviously rates the Scotish League, picking players from there and the A-League over good Championship players, like Luongo and Dougall. Our current left back has 50 caps, was just relegated with Dundee United, yet you'd pick Iredale (who has never been called-up) over him all-day everyday.

I really don't think Australia would have advised Baccas not to join a League 1 club, given the teams the rest of the squad represent.

England will batter this Australia side later in the year, if they take it seriously. Be surprised if Australia get out of their own half.

BWFC twitter is full of absolute fucking ‘tards

“Evatt said we had moved away from the free market” and “panic signing”

does that mean we can’t ever sign someone on a free again?

yes the club has some money to spend and it will be spent wisely on the right players who they hope will have the right impact. But ultimately there is a budget and that budget will be used where it can make the most difference

no one can legislate for the GJ injury or Toal not responding to treatment as they’d hoped.

so therefore yes any cover we do get in the back line now will be a degree of urgency / panic as it’s one area they thought they didn’t need to worry about once the Tranmere and Vale lads came in.

we’re still after a RWB and that hasn’t changed and some of the money we have will clearly be spent there

honest to god they’re all Just thick as fuck on there!

Thing is, these gobshite fans have always been around.

Before the days of Facebook and Twitter their audience was just their mates and any unfortunate soul in the pub who was within earshot.  Social Media just gives the rest of us poor fuckers the displeasure of seeing/hearing their views.

I'd also say every club has it's fair share of mongos, it's not just BWFC.

I think the difference is that these days we all get to hear every rumour, back in th'day there might just as many rumours but 90% of them you would not hear.

Some bloke on Twitter yesterday said something like - We have to work to a budget, that means if we miss out on players so be it, if that means we do not get autos then I can live with that. -

He got slaughtered for a lack of ambition. It is a crazy world.

Maybe they didn't but it was reported they did in the media is all I'm saying.

I saw some articles at the time including this one which says:

"Having previously attracted strong interest from Championship newcomers Ipswich, Baccus’ strong preference is to test himself in England’s second tier as he eyes a move away from Paisley after an impressive debut season in Scotland.

The mooted switch to Bolton, who made the League One playoffs last season, was viewed by many as a sideways proposition for the five-cap Socceroo.

And there are suggestions he may have been informed by the national team hierarchy that taking the Trotters option could even have jeopardised his Australia spot."

Now it may well be media bollocks but there's a decent chance that even if the national team didn't actually say it to him, Baccus may well have read it or it was flagged up to him which in turn may have influenced the outcome of the negotiations.

We do seem to agree on the organisational and workrate aspects of the current Aussie squad - but that's why I think Baccus, who also has a fair bit of quality, would have been just what we need in midfield at this time.

Plus a quality 6 and RWB of course. Maybe some others too.
